Apathetic or overwhelmed?

In her book Untamed, Glennon Doyle writes about heartbreak and how it's "not something to be avoided; it's something to pursue." She explains that:

"The magic of heartbreak is that each person's doorbell rings in response to something specific... is it racial injustice? Bullying? Animal cruelty? Hunger? War?... The thing that breaks your heart is the very thing you were born to help heal. Every world changer's work begins with a broken heart."

My response to reading that passage was that IT ALL BREAKS MY HEART. There is nothing specific that rings my doorbell - it's an incessant chiming. This makes it very hard to know what to focus on. And, when you can't focus, you can't act. Does anyone else feel this way?

I suppose the solution is to just pick anything and work at it. As long as you're doing SOMETHING to better the state of our planet or the lives of the people and creatures on it, then you're helping. But is it enough? Or do we have to go all evangelical as Walker says below?

Moreover, if you're not engaging in activism, are you apathetic? I doubt it - I think people care. I also think that they're so overwhelmed by their immediate problems that they're distracted from the larger problems.

I saw a comic somewhere in which the artist sketched all these little scenes of people being like, "Climate change?! I don't have time to worry about climate change! I have two jobs so that I can pay rent and feed my family."

Obviously, one could argue that nothing is more urgent than making sure our planet remains hospitable to the human species, or else we're all going to bite the dust. But, all these problems are links in the same chain, really, aren't they?

For example, if you're working all hours to make ends meet, it's going to be hard to muster up the enthusiasm to fundraise for a climate change organisation. But, climate change disproportionately affects those who are poorest, so the poor stand to benefit the most from successfully managing climate change.

What about you? Do you have a cause you're passionate about? Is there one thing that rings your doorbell and breaks your heart? Or are there so many that you know that if you open the door, you'll be bowled over?
