We're starting our fourth challenge today, Get Out There, and it's a little bit different from the previous challenges. This one is going to run for two weeks rather than just one week. It's not because it's a particularly difficult challenge - in fact, I think it'll be one of the most enjoyable ones - but I'm finding the pace of a challenge a week is just too fast.
When I first started planning out The Kin Project, my idea had been to run each challenge for a month rather than a week. I'd heard of the whole 'it takes 21 days to form a habit' concept and thought a month would give people time to really make a lasting change. And then I talked myself out of it because I was concerned that if people weren't keen on a challenge, they'd be out of the loop for a whole month. Since starting The Kin Project, I've realised, yet again, that a month is NOTHING. It flies by. And if someone misses out on a month of The Kin Project, I think they'll survive.
I've found a few problems with running each challenge for only a week. On a selfish level, it prevents me from getting into the challenge because I spend most of the week preparing the next week's challenge. While everyone else doing The Kin Project might not be occupied with that particular task, call me crazy but I have a sneaking suspicion that a lot of people may also be busy. So let's buy ourselves a bit more time...
I've also noticed that there's a ripple effect with each challenge. For example, for last week's challenge, The Final Straw, as we all started getting rid of that piece of pointless plastic, the natural consequence was that we began to notice all the other pointless plastic in our lives. I think it would have been a lot more effective to have a whole month dedicated to trying to get rid of any single use plastic.
SO! The plan is to run the current challenge for two weeks, from today, June 26th through Sunday, 9th July. The next challenge will run for three weeks, from Monday the 10th of July through Sunday the 30th July. And then from that point on, the challenges will run monthly. I think we'll get a lot more out of each challenge if we can devote a little more time to them.
