How do you feel about veganism? What about carnism? "About WHAT?!" you might be thinking...

Ezra Klein interviews Dr. Melanie Joy about the trouble with the way we eat in this fascinating podcast. As he writes, "Joy’s work applies to much more than how we eat: It’s a lens for thinking about all the systems we’re so deeply embedded in that we can no longer see them, and so we learn not to notice if they compel us to do things that don’t align with what we believe to be right, or who we actually want to be. And it’s about what happens when those ideologies become visible and we have to grapple with what they’ve done to us and the world we live in."

What can I do to help?

Just listen here.

How much time will it take?

Hands up if you love to travel...

If you're like me and you can't imagine NOT going places, purchasing carbon offsets is one way to undo the damage your miles in the air are causing.

What can I do to help?

Calculate your carbon footprint and purchase carbon offsets to match.

How much time will it take?

Will vary depending on how much you fly.

Virgin Australia is removing plastic straws and stirrers from their flights and lounges. That's over 7.5 million stirrers and 260,000 straws per year that will no longer end up in landfill/oceans/up a turtle's nose.

What can I do to help?

When you order a drink, remember to tell them you don't want a straw.

How much time will it take?

Less than ten seconds.

In Nagano Chasuyama Zoo in Japan, there's an elephant who has spent 25 years in a tiny concrete cell. As if that weren't bad enough, for the past nine of those years she's been alone.
Elephants are exceptionally social and highly intelligent. They live 60-70 years, have families, and even grieve their dead.  Keeping one in solitary confinement is a form of torture.

Every year, 8 million tonnes of plastic leaks into our oceans. Boyan Slat, the now 24-year-old Dutch inventor, has been working on plans to clean up the mess for six years. Exactly a week ago, he and his Ocean Cleanup team launched their revolutionary marine litter cleanup system from San Francisco. If the research is correct, a scaled up fleet of 60 systems could clean up 50% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch within five years.

What can I do to help?

Avoid buying single-use plastic as much as possible. Only about 9% of plastic ever gets recycled.

How much time will it take?

Avoiding single-use plastic is an ongoing battle.
